Description: It contains Straits Settlements Original Correspondence (1838-1946). For 1867-1919, this series contains correspondence dealing with the Straits Settlements and the states of the Malay Peninsula. (The first 10 volumes consist of miscellaneous papers from the India Office concerning their administration of the Straits Settlements. Correspondence dealing with the Malay States after 1920 is found in CO 717, but topics concerning Malaya as a whole tend to appear in CO 273 even after that date. For the period 1873-1890s, CO 273 should be used in conjunction with the Confidential Prints (CO 882) and the Parliamentary Command Papers, which contain printed copies of documents removed from CO 273. Appendix V contains a select list of Parliamentary papers.The number of files involved is very large, and to make them more manageable the file list and index for the CO 273 have been divided into three parts (published in nine volumes), the first covering 1867-1900, the second 1901-1919, and the third 1920-1946. Appendix IV lists the contents of the original bound volumes that make up the CO 273 between 1867 and 1929
